Lynn Manka started at Long John Silver’s in 1979 — two years after the restaurant opened.

She’s still there 46 years later.

What does Manka like about the job?

“My customers,” she said. “They’re everything to me. They’re like family. Without them, I don’t get a paycheck.”

The seafood restaurant on South Locust Street has many repeat customers.

“I have a lot of regulars. And if I don’t see them on a regular basis, I get worried about them,” she said.

In charge of eight employees, Manka has been the restaurant’s manager for about 10 years.

Sometimes, Manka runs the restaurant singlehandedly. If the weather’s not good, she’d rather know her employees are OK and run the restaurant herself.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Manka was all alone during the day.

Usually, she’s joined by a cook. On Wednesday morning, she had a cashier.

But if it’s cold or stormy, “I’d rather have my crew home where it’s safe than bring them out in this kind of weather,” she said Wednesday.
