Hillsborough County student with record GPA receives college diploma weeks before finishing high school

TAMPA, Fla. - A Gaither High School senior who set the Hillsborough CountySchools grade point average record received his college diploma weeks before finishing high school.

Dylan Mazard's sky-high school GPA is an astonishing 11.84, which might also be the highest ever recorded in the state.

"I kind of just worked as hard as workable and took advantage of everything high school had to offer," Dylan said before his Hillsborough Community College graduation. "My parents are always saying that awareness is the one thing that changes the trajectory of somebody's life, it helps them comprehend their true potential."

Dylan has always been ahead of the curve, taking Florida Virtual high educational facility classes in sixth grade. By eighth grade, he was enrolled in classes at HCC. Then came the countless Honors and AP courses in high school.

He even spends his summers learning.

Gaither High School senior Dylan Mazard posts a record-breaking 11.84 GPA

TAMPA, Fla. — As a toddler, Dylan Mazard read bedtime stories to his parents.

He also learned his multiplication tables and helped his Dad fix the garbage disposal.

"It was kind of scary at first," said dad Thomas Mazard, a beloved guidance counselor at Gaither High School in Tampa. "We watched him do things outside the norm."

Dylan's superheroic origin story didn't stop there. Not even close.

As a current senior at Gaither High, Dylan just posted a record-breaking grade point average — 11.84.

Yep, you read that right.

That 11.84 GPA is the highest ever in Hillsborough County, and the school believes it could be the highest ever in Florida, too.

"From a very young age, my parents always told me that if you settle for mediocrity, you'll never realize your true potential," said Dylan.

So I know what you're thinking: How do you achieve such a thing?

Well, by getting straight A's — forever. And by always wanting to top your older brother.

Also by earning Florida Virtual School high-school credits in 6th grade and taking courses at Hillsborough Community College in 8th grade.

Even during a global crisis, one high school senior is making history on two fronts.

Timi Adelakun has become the first black valedictorian of South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida, and has the highest GPA ever recorded at the school.

"Coming from a low-income community, it means a lot in general because of the way I was brought up," Adelakun told ABC News.

The 18-year-old, who has a 5.604 GPA, said that although he was surprised to discover the news, school officials alerted him of his potentially history-making grades long before his senior year. He also jokingly admits that when he graduates, it will most likely be slightly higher.

Adelakun, whose parents are from Nigeria, is the youngest of three children and neither of his parents attended college.

He said that his major accomplishment is somewhat bittersweet considering his father -- who was deported over a decade ago -- won't be there to help celebrate the big moment.

"He's missed out and it's not his fault. It's not any of our fault," Adelakun said.
