World record mountain goat
World-record mountain goat shot with incline by Kansas native in Alaska
- Northeast Kansas native Kaleb Baird shoots world-record mountain goat in Alaska
- Goat's horns measure 53 4/8 inches on Pope and Young scale
- Previous world-record goat set just 10 months prior
A Council Grove native who took down a mountain goat earlier this fall in southeast Alaska can now lay claim to a world record.
Kaleb Baird, 33, a Council Grove High School graduate, shot the massive billy goat on Sept. 11 of this year. On Dec. 5, the Pope and Immature Club convened a special panel of judges in Prescott, Ariz., to measure the potential earth record, and the judges scored the goat at 53 4/8 inches, making it the largest bow-harvested mountain goat in North America by just two-eighths of an inch.
The previous record was put just 10 months prior, on Feb. 15, by fellow Alaskan Rosey Roseland. Roseland's goat was taken on Revillagigedo Island in Alaska and measured 53 2/8 inches officially.
"Congratulations to Kaleb Baird on his very special Rocky Mountain Goat, and the Pope and Young Club's new Earth Record," Eli Randall, director of records for the Pope and Young Club, said in a news release shortly aft

All Justin Kallusky could see at first was the mountain goat’s butt. It stuck out from the large, dry cut bank he was laying under, sheltered from the midday sun. He’d been there for a while, and Kallusky was settled in and ready to wait him out. After staring at the goat’s backside for an hour or two, Kallusky decided to take in his surroundings. He let his eyes stray from the fluffy white goat, which would turn out the be the world record mountain goat (though Kallusky didn’t know it at the time).
“I looked up and around and stared out across the valley, and was like ‘Oh my goodness, how beautiful is this? How amazing is this place?'” the 42-year-old lineman from Cranbrook, B.C. tells Outdoor Life. “I just felt this sense of gratitude and peace and I just totally felt in tune with that environment in that moment in time. I was so happy to be there, I felt so privileged, hunting these beautiful animals in one of the most spectacular places on Earth. It didn’

We recently told you about a new archery world record black bear recognized by the Pope and Young Club, and the records keep falling with the announcement of a new archery world record mountain goat.
Meeting on Feb. 15, 2020, at Pope and Young Club headquarters in Chatfield, Minnesota, a special panel of judges considered a potential archery world record mountain goat taken by bowhunter Rosey Roseland. After examining the goat’s horns, the panel announced a final score of 53 2/8 inches, which narrowly topped the previous world record of 53 inches. The former record mountain goat was arrowed near Kalum Lake, British Columbia, on Feb. 16, 2006. Roseland’s new world record was killed on Revillagigedo Island in southeast Alaska on Oct. 3, 2019.
“I had been putting in for a limited draw permit for this area (Ketchikan 005) for about 10 years,” Roseland said. “The area is known for its big goats, and is fairly close to my home, POW (Prince of Wales) Island. I was after a mature billy, so
Greg and Kyle welcome the new world record Mountain Goat holder to the pod. We had the good fortune of meeting Justin Kallusky down in Reno at Sheep Week where he had the new world record Billy scored by a panel of judges from Boone and Crockett.
Justin tells the whole story of his world record hunt including the highs and lows. While on the mountain waiting for this giant goat to make a move Justin was compelled by the beauty of the Stikine Wilderness and penned a couple of inspirational poems which he shares on this cast. He then talks about his stalk on this mountain goat and how he came to claim the world record status with an official B and C score of 60 4/8" crushing the old record by 3 inches.
Justin is a humble guy and hearing him talk about the good he hopes to accomplish with this accomplishment is inspiring. You are in for one heck of a story and we are confident you will enjoy our chat with the new world record holder - "The Kallusky Goat."
