World record blackfin tuna

Salt Water Sportsman reports a brand-new all-tackle blackfin tuna world write down has been certified by the IGFA. Robert Kowalski caught the 50-pound,1ounce blackfin in June from Miss Britt out of Miami.

Though one of the smallest members of its family, the blackfin is a okay fighting fish on suitable tackle — and very good eating. While fairly common offshore of Florida reefs. they don’t often migrate much further north. I only remember once coming across them while trolling canyon waters off New Jersey.

The Ocean Explorer from Belmar didn’t find any of the hoped-for cod on Saturday, though some ling were boated on every drop.

A miniature craft advisory in NY/NJ Bight comes down at 6 p.m. The forecast is for northwest winds at 10-15 knots by morning before dropping to 5-10 in the afternoon.

A monster blackfin tuna caught during The Miami Dolphins Fins Weekend tournament is an unofficial world record. The 50.1-pound blackfin was certified by an IGFA biologist, and it outweighs the existing IGFA all-tackle world record by a little less than three-quarters of a pound.

Angler Bob Kowalski landed the huge blackfin aboard the 34’ Express Sportfisher Miss Britt, which was captained by Gareth Haddam and chartered by Pete Sinnick and his family. In addition to being a potential new world record, the fish won the largest tuna division at the tournament and earned the team a $30,000 payout.

The existing IGFA all-tackle world record blackfin tuna weighed 49 pounds, 6 ounces. It was caught in 2006 off Marathon, Florida Keys by Capt. Mathew Pullen.

Fins Weekend is an annual fundraiser hosted by the Miami Dolphins. It is a two-day tournament with proceeds going to support the Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute Youth Athletic Outreach Program.

MIAMI — The Miami Dolphins hosted the 25th edition of Fins Weekend in Coconut Grove, bringing together NFL players, coaches, alumni, cheerleaders, and fans for a two-day celebration and fundraiser.

This year's annual fishing tournament was highlighted by a biologist-certified unofficial world record-breaking catch of a 50.1-pound blackfin tuna — a first in the tournament's history, according to the Dolphins. Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Fins head coach Jimmy Johnson, who helped launch the annual event in 1997, was there to celebrate the historic feat.

The festivities began Friday with an invite-only Captain's Reception, where tournament participants received gift bags and enjoyed light bites and drinks.

On Saturday, anglers got up at sunrise at the Regatta Harbour Marina and took to the sea to catch the largest kingfish, dolphin and tuna. The fishing tournament was directed by Jamie Bunn of Blue Water Movements.

Once boats returned to the marina, contestants brought in their hauls for weigh-in. Angler Bob Kowalski, the Sinnick family and Captain Gareth Haddam of Miss Britt 34 Express set the unofficial world record with their blackfin tuna catch.
