My husband’s paternity leave came to an end after 8 months. To make the most of our final weekend together, we took a scenic drive via the Wangan Bayshore Route (首都高速道路湾岸線) and headed west to the port city of Yokohama.
About Yokohama
Recently voted the Kanto region’s most desirable city to live in, Yokohama is the capital capital of Kanagawa Prefecture. Yokohama is also Japan’s second largest municipality (population of 3.7 million) after Tokyo (population 38 million and that is NOT a typo!).
Once a small fishing village, Yokohama changed the course of Japanese history and its economy when Japan was opened up to the west in the mid-19th century. While Japan had trade relations with the west in the Kyushu region, the opening of Yokohama port really shook things up.
Yokohama soon became Japan’s prominent port city. After World War II/the US Occupation, the US Navy set up shop there. Adding to the foreign influence of Yokohama is that it’s the home of the world’s largest Chinatown!

Yokohama World Porters

If you want to visit Yokohama World Porters, it is recommended to use Sakuragicho Station on the JR Line or the municipal subway. There are two main ways to get there directly. If you walk, you should use Kishamichi. This is a pedestrian walkway that uses about 500 meters of the former port railway, which opened in 1911 (Meiji 44), and crosses the sea. The walking path, which still has rails and bridges, is a popular walking course among locals. The other access method is YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN, Japan's first urban loop-type ropeway. It connects the area in front of Sakuragicho Station to the front of Yokohama World Porters, allowing you to arrive quickly while enjoying a walk in the air. Both routes let you enjoy scenery unique to Yokohama. Especially at night, the illuminations are beautiful, so you can enjoy the walk as well.

This complex with shops and restaurants was opened under the concept “A variety of worlds are here” in 1999, which is in a corner of the development "Minato Mirai 21” facing Yokohama Bay. Along with the neighboring Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse and Yokohama Cosmo World, it is the spot for shopping and dating.
