When we go to the World’s Longest Yard Sale in Tennessee, we like to start at Signal Mountain, just north of Chattanooga.  One, it is easy to find hotels in Chattanooga.  Two, Signal Mountain is always a fun stop.  I also love Picker’s Field, just a little north of Signal Mountain.

Clarkrange and Crossville are the iconic Tennessee stops and definitely places to allow lots of time for!

What is the 127 “World’s Longest” Yard Sale?

The 127 Yard Sale began in 1987 by Mike Walker, the former Fentress County Executive in Jamestown, TN. The idea behind this event was that it would encourage travelers to bypass interstate highways and favor the scenic route. This is now an annual event that takes place the first Thursday through Sunday in August each year. The route spans across 6 states (Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama) and is nearly 700 miles long. This makes it the World’s Longest Yard Sale!

The route goes from Addison, MI to Gadsden, Al. In Chattanooga, TN, Highway 127 ends, and the route continues onto Lookout Mountain Parkway (named by Reader’s Digest as one of America’s most scenic drives) through Georgia and Alabama.

When and where are the yard sales?

The World's Longest Yard Sale takes place the first week of August, annually. There is no opening or closing time for individual sales along the route—each vendor chooses their “open for business” time. Ho

So you’ve got a garage, a barn, a house, a storage unit, or all of the above overflowing with things you just couldn’t live without but now, for whatever reason, you’ve come to the conclusion it’s time to part with some of the “stuff”.

Or maybe you are an enthusiastic “yardsaler” yourself and you have lots of things you think other people might like to buy.

Or maybe you are a craftsman, or an artisan, or maybe even somebody who just thinks setting up for the 127 Yard Sale would be a wonderful idea. What do you call to know? Here are my top tips for first-time sellers.

CAN I DO IT IN MY YARD?

Yes, you can! That's the way the 127 Yard Sale started out, with the thought that people could set up a sale table or a farm wagon under a shade tree in their front yard and sell their junk stuff! People still participate that way every year.

However, since hundreds of thousands of people began to make the 127 Yard Sale their summer vacation and it became "The World's Longest Yard Sale" selling from a front yard has become more difficult.

The number of cars and people from literally around the planet have made the original framework, though still quaint and fine, a challenge for yardsalers.

Last year, I road-tripped through rural Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia in search of all the treasure hiding at the World’s Longest Yard Sale. And I’m doing it again this year, in even more style — and thanks to Chevy, who is supplying me with their electric Silverado truck for the trip. Last year’s trip taught me a lot, and I think I’m much better prepared to take on the sale this week (it starts tomorrow!).

If you’ve ever wanted to take a road trip purely for the purpose of treasure-hunting, you’ll probably love this sale. But you’ll need to know how to do it right.

In the summer of 2010, I decided to fulfill a lifelong ambition and shop the famed World's Longest Yard Sale about which I had heard so much. Before embarking for the wilds of Ohio, however, I did my research, scouring the internet for every pertinent bit of information. Which turned out to be next to nothing.

I was amazed at the lack of really uesful info. Oh, plenty of sites gave the dates (first Thursday in August through Saturday) and encouraging hype. One blog even listed some indispensible items to bring along, which I did find helpful. But no web site, at least, none that I could find, advised me where to start, how long it would take, or even posted a map that showed me where in Ohio I was headed.

Even worse, I came across one poor shopper's lament that the sale had turned into a major waste of time in the last few years.

Undaunted, I forged ahead, flying mostly by the seat of my pants, survived three days of non-stop yard-saling, and lived to tell the tale.
