The third suburban-type shopping mall in New York City was built on a 51-acre parcel. This was located 7.9 miles east of Times Square, in the Elmhurst section of Queens. The site had housed the Fairyland Amusement Park between 1950 and 1968. It was accessed by the Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495) and New York City Subway's Woodhaven Boulevard-Slattery Plazastation.
Plans for QUEENS CENTER were formally announced in June 1970. The 60 million dollar shopping hub was developed by Michigan's Taubman Centers and designed by Victor Gruen Associates, of Los Angeles. Fully-enclosed, the complex was anchored by a 4-level (310,000 square foot), New York City-based Abraham & Straus and 3-level (140,000 square foot), New York City-based Ohrbach's.
Abraham & Straus and Ohrbach's became the first operational stores, on September 12, 1973. A mall-wide dedication was held in October. All sixty-seven charter stores and services were open for business by late 1974.

Popular Discount Company Closing All Stores In New York State
A store that's been "rewarding bargain hunters" for nearly 50 years is closing all of its locations in the Empire State.
Discount retailer Tuesday Morning announced plans to file for bankruptcy and close nearly half of its stores across the United States.
Tuesday Morning Files For Bankruptcy
Tuesday Morning officials announced this week the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will close around 265 stores.
Company officials say the least profitable stores will be closed, according to Business Insider.
Tuesday Morning, based in Dallas, Texas, opened up in 1974. It's comparable to T.J. Maxx.
"IT’S THE THRILL OF THE HUNT! Rewarding Bargain Hunters with Name Brand Deals Since 1974," the company states on its website.
In 2020, the company also filed for bankruptcy and closed over 200 stores.
