Should I take AP Society History as a sophomore?

Hi! I am currently a freshman in high school but scheduling my classes for next year as a sophomore. This year I’m taking Spanish 2, English 1 honors, Geometry, Biology, society geo, and doing a sport. I have straight A’s right now. Today was my councilor meeting to schedule classes for next year. I scheduled my classes for next year as Spanish 3 honors, English 2 honors, Algebra 2, Chem, and world history which my councilor said were good choices. However she also said that she believes I would do good in AP world history. Before the meeting I had decided not to take the class since I am not extremely interested in history and some of my friends in higher grades said the class was extremely hard for them. My councilor told me I could get the recommendation for whap (AP world history) within the next few days and schedule and appointment back with her to change from regular planet history to AP. Now I am debating whether or not I should take it. Any thoughts? Thanks for any feedback!

Advanced Placement (AP) exams are more than just a measure of academic achievement—they're a way to demonstrate your ability to thrive in challenging, college-level courses. For students aiming to stand out in a competitive admissions landscape, excelling in AP classes and exams can provide a critical edge, especially at colleges that value academic rigor.
Participation in AP exams has grown steadily in recent years. In the class of 2022, 34.6% of U.S. public high school graduates took at least one AP exam, and this trend continued with nearly 1.2 million students participating in the class of 2023. Among these students, 21.7% scored a 3 or higher—an achievement that signals readiness for advanced academics.
Strong AP scores not only validate your academic potential but also help you stand out at top universities that explicitly reward academic rigor. Below, we explore how to choose the right AP classes, the colleges that value these scores, and strategies for leveraging your AP success.

I am currently already signed up to take AP Computer Science Principles sophomore year along with Language/Literature Honors 2, which I have heard is the hardest class of the year. I want to try to take as many APs as I can that fit my interests and will not make me too overwhelmed. I am wondering if I should take AP World History too, but older students have told me that the class itself is not too hard except for the fact that you have to write a lot of essays and the combination with Lang/Lit Honors 2 may be challenging. Any thoughts or past experiences on this? Thanks.

What’s the normal AP history progression at your school?

There are many schools where sophomores take AP World. If other sophomores have done it AND you are a strong writer (A currently in Honors English 9) then I don’t see why not.
Does your school offer AP Human Geo? It would be a gentler introduction to AP methodology.

AP World is the standard Honors-track history class for Sophomores at our HS. 80% of students who took Honors US History as Freshman take APWH as Sophomores - so probably 30%+ of the class. So

Hi!
I'm in AP World History right now and, even though history is one of my worst subjects, the class isn't extremely hard to manage, it just gets hard about two weeks before unit tests when you have to study. In APWH you learn completely independently. Each week, you'll have to read around 20 textbook pages and memorize continuities, comparisons, discontinuities, etc., not specific dates or people. In class, you will apply your knowledge and gain critical thinking skills. (at least this is how my school does it)
Even so, this really varies depending on your school. If students in your school tell you to stay away from the class, it might be good to consider. If it is the teacher, then this could influence the class experience dramatically. However, maybe many students simply don't like putting in the work. I would, if you haven't already, ask sophomores exactly why the class is so difficult. If it is because of the teacher or something else really important, I would take the on-level world history class and try to fit in another AP that aligns with your interests. If you could tell me what subjects you en
To take AP World History or not as a sophomore?
Hey there! AP World History is a challenging course, but it's certainly manageable with good time management and organization. Many students find this class to be a mix of reading, writing, and critical analysis. It can be rigorous but very rewarding. If you're passionate about history and enjoy learning about different cultures and time periods, you'll likely find it engaging.
One thing to keep in mind is your other commitments. You may also be involved in sports and clubs; think about how to balance it all before you decide to take the class. Be realistic about your time, and make sure not to overextend yourself. It's essential to maintain a balance so you can enjoy high school and not burn out.
If you think you can handle your extracurricular activities along with this AP's workload, go for it! But if you're already feeling stretched thin, it might be wise to consider a less demanding history class. Remember, it’s not just about the rigor of your courses, but also about doing well in them and keeping up with your other interests.
