So far i've only gotten them from drops and carves. I have however gotten regular spiritvein gems from the reward screen. So for monsters like, according to the wiki, tempered rajang/deviljho and some others is it better to just murder them? I have farmed more than 50 of these gems plus several more that I used to upgrade several equipments (I have a full set for bow, another for lance, another for longsword, plus an additional one for bow again). I can confirm that you can get them only from T3 monsters and that you can get them from drops, carves AND rewards. Last night I got three gems from the same monster (tempered Teostra): drop, carve AND in the reward box. I can also tell you that, based on my own statistical results, which are not enough to extract any conclusion, but can give an estimated idea: I rarely got any of those gems from the reward boss. Carves and drops seem equally likely to get the gem. Since you get more drops than carves (4) even without geologist, you are more likely to get them from drops.
