The Hershey Story Museum

The Town of Hershey

Hershey (or Derry Church) was an ideal location for chocolate production due to its proximity to dairy farms and rail lines. When Mr. Hershey returned to his hometown to expand his chocolate business, he didn’t just open a factory; he built a community. He envisioned the town of Hershey to be an ideal place to work, live, and play.

  • Don’t Miss: Personal belongings of Milton, and his wife, Catherine, on display.
  • Most People Don’t Know: Mr. Hershey almost sailed on the RMS Titanic. He avoided the ill-fated voyage because business matters forced him to leave early from Europe on another ship. His canceled check to the White Star Line is on display.

Mr. Hershey’s Legacy

In addition to his legacy as a chocolatier, Milton Hershey touched the lives of countless children through his philanthropy. Milton and Catherine Hershey didn’t have any children of their own, and in 1909, they established the Hershey Industrial School for orphaned boys. Today, Milton Hershey School, as it is now known, provides cost-free, private education and housing for underprivileged children.

In a previous post I shared my experience in Lancaster, Pennsylvania while visiting the land of the Amish. Well, my friends and I decided decided that since Hershey, Pennsylvania was only 42 miles from Lancaster and none of us had ever been there that we would spend our Sunday in Hershey.

Our first stop was and from there we went to .

So our first stop was The Hershey Story Museum. I was completely impressed with Milton Hershey. His vision, his humanitarianism and his strong work ethic were just, “Wow!”.

Here is his story straight from the museum’s website:

By the age of 26, Milton Snavely Hershey was penniless. With two failed businesses behind him, he was an unlikely candidate for success. Yet Mr. Hershey, a man with steadfast convictions and an insatiable curiosity, turned his story from rags to riches by persevering, eventually selling his caramel company for $1 million to devote all his energies to making chocolate.

Using equipment purchased at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, Milton Hershey began experimenting with boiled milk, sugar and cacao beans in an effort to create affordable milk chocolate that could be mass-produced. In a f

Our family attraction is more than a museum about Milton S. Hershey’s life and legacy; it’s also an interactive experience flawless for kids and families. We’ve developed some special ways for kids to explore The Hershey Story with the help of an adult.

A Scavenger Hunt Made With Kids in Mind!

We affection our littlest visitors! Pre-readers can find fun objects throughout the Museum Experience on a Scavenger Hunt! As they walk through the museum galleries, adults can ask their youngsters to glance around the displays and detect some colorful and easy-to-locate items. And when they’re done, they’ll get a fun “I did it!” sticker!

Just ask the front desk or a gallery attendant for the Scavenger Hunt for your pre-schooler (or you can download the Scavenger Hunt here).

    Kid-focused special exhibits

In addition to the five permanent museum exhibits on display in our upstairs gallery, we regularly produce special exhibits that are displayed for a limited time in our first-floor gallery. When the exhibits are designed for kids, they are very hands-on in nature, planned to engage children in a more interactive way than is possible with the permanent show
